On 11 June 11, AMMF: The Cholangiocarcinoma Charity gathered cholangiocarcinoma, researchers, providers, and individuals with lived experience with biliary tract cancers to speak on the disease and its challenges in an evening reception hosted and introduced by the MSP for Edinburgh Northern and Leith, Ben Macpherson, and attended by a further four Members of Scottish Parliament.
During this event, speakers informed guests about the situation of cholangiocarcinoma patients in Scotland, as well as about advances in cholangiocarcinoma treatment and care more globally. The insightful discussion was centered around the need to support molecular profiling as a means of accessing novel drugs. These novel drugs, in turn, can constitute a life-extending intervention for biliary tract cancer patients.
Important contributions to this effort were made by members of the Precision-BTC Network, including presentations from Helen Morement (CEO AMMF and WG4 co-Leader) and Professor Timothy Kendall (WG1/2/3/5/6), as well as poster presentations from Euan Brennan and Dr Paula Olaizola (WG2/3/6). In addition, this event followed the approval of a plan for extending molecular testing for Scottish bile duct patients submitted by Prof Chiara Braconi (Action Vice-Chair) and Prof Kendall in 2023, which is pending the allocation of funds.
Following this reception, Jenni Minto MSP (Minister for Public Health and Woman’s Health) has agreed to consider the business case for molecular profiling tests for bile duct cancer and provide a formal response.Follow AMMF for updates and for information about future events and initiatives.
